the visual text i am working on is the 1988 film "beeltejuice" by tim burton
scenes
Scene 1: 7:52-8:20: Adam and Barbra die, this leads up to the rest of the movie as it was their death that allows Betelgeuse and the Deetze’s to be introduced, Betelgeuse by an advert to try and get himself summoned to mess with the living and the Deetze’s because they move in to Adam and Barbra’s house. This allows the rest of the story to happen because it is the interference of Betelgeuse and the deetze’s that motivate the Maitlands to proceed with their events seen in the story.
Scene 2: 19:50-20:47: Barbra tries leaving their home which transports them to saturn where she and Adam are attacked by a sandworm. This expands upon the feeling of isolation and being trapped which was first touched upon by adam being transported to saturn earlier in the movie and the fact that the only other place they can go is seen as a very unhelpful place that just gave them the advice of “do it yourself” when they complain about the Deetze’s. This makes them feel trapped in their home as the Deetze’s change it to their ideal home and are antagonistic to the Maitlands.
Scene 3: 1:18:51-1:24:47: Betelgeuse tries to escape to the real world to cause mischief forever by marrying the daughter of the deetze’s, that being Lydia this shows that Betelgeuse is willing to do anything to achieve his goals, including attacking the Maitlands and marrying a child. He is eventually defeated when a sandworm attacks him after being caught off guard by the Maitlands attempts to seal him away.

answer
Who would most likely read this text and why
Young adults and adults due to the themes presented in the text
What genre does this text belong to
Comedy/horror comedy is widely used in this text either in proper jokes or gags involving quite a bid of body horror/humon like a person who got flattened saying they’re feeling “flat”
How are children, teenagers, young adults, and adults constructed in this text?
The adults are mainly constructed as greedy and willing to do anything to get what they want, meanwhile the children are seen as being more compassionate and understanding
who is allowed to speak? Who is quoted?
The maitlands are rarely allowed to speak to the deetze’s as only lydia can see or hear them meaning that the maitlands are mostly quoted and are ignored I think the director did this to show how uncompassionate the other adults are
What questions about itself does the text not raise?
Why a ghost leaving their haunt site transports them to saturn and why there are sandworms on saturn and how the other parties (dead/alien) affect the world of the living
What views of the world is the text presenting?
It presents the view of the mailands, rural people being forced to share a space with people who tear down their hard work to replace it with their ideal home
What different interpretations of the text are possible?
It could also be interpreted as “rural vs modern” or “wealthy vs average”
