part 7 Consciousness

  1. How is it that Connor was not unwound? p318 : they gave him an ID for a 19 year old
  2. Whose arm does he now have? P319 : Rolands
  3. On p321 Risa tells Connor how she won't be unwound. Do you think her decision to not accept the spine of an Unwind was purely ethical, or was she also playing the system in order to stay alive? : i think that it was what she thought was right because that would be accepting what she fought so hard to prevent happening to her
  4. Since the explosions at Happy Jack, what have people been doing? What has Cy-Fi's role been in this? P325 : he's been trying to drop the legal age for unwinding or just changing things about unwinding
  5. Lev's parents disown him. Who is trying to become his guardian? P328. : Pastor Dan
  6. Why has Pastor Dan resigned? P329 : he didn't feel that god would condone human tithing
  7. P331-332 explain what has happened to Harlan Dunfee. What do you think about the Admiral and his wife's plan? Was it what you expected? :  he got all of the parts that were given to other people back together and they were all talking about things they remember or can talk about shared issues and it wasn't what i expected
  8. Who takes over the graveyard? P331 : Connor and Risa

part 6 unwound

  1. Connor and Risa are sent to Happy Jack Harvest Camp. Describe what it is like, and explain why it is like this. P265-266 : it has bright colours little red in a pine covered ridge and it's like that so it's kid friendly
  2. What is the exact percentage of the Unwind that you have to keep alive? Why is it not 100%, as Risa believes? P269 : 99.44% and that's for thins like the appendix
  3. What do the unwinds call the place where unwinding occurs? P271 : the chop shop
  4. Lev too, is at Happy Jack, but as a tithe. Why is this?  : because of his name because the juvey cops probably have a data base for unwinds and tithes
  5. On p278 Connor and Roland finally have the fight that's been brewing between them. What does each character realise during this? : that they were both waiting for this to happen and that they both wanted it to happen
  6. P284 - What group has Lev joined, who recruited him, and when will they follow out their plan?  : mai and blaine and they're now clappers and they'll carry out they're plan at one pm before connor gets unwound
  7. Roland is called for unwinding on p286. Why is this?  :
  8. Chapter 61 is arguably the most confronting chapter in the book. Here we have Roland's first person narrative of being unwound. Do you think this chapter is necessary? Why do you think Shusterman chose to have Roland's experience detailed? Do his memories alter how you view him?  : i think that it's not really necessary but it's good to have in there and i think Neal chose to detail it because it shows us how unwinding happens and Rolands memories don't change my thoughts of him
  9. Why does Lev decide not to clap? P310 : because it goes against his morals/what he thinks he should do

part 5 the graveyard

  1. Which job in the graveyard does Risa get assigned to? How does this come about? P201: Risa gets assigned the job of nurse as when she was about to leave with the job of helping in the galley before Connor broke someones nose to get Risa the job of nurse
  2. Why doesn't Connor volunteer for "work"? P205 : he thinks of it as a way the Admiral's using them
  3. How does Roland unsettle Connor? P206-207 : by telling him about a theory he had that the Admiral has unwound people to make himself look different
  4. P208-209 detail Lev's arrival, and Connor's reaction. Make sure you fill in your character profiles for both characters. :
  5. P214-215 Connor learns the truth about the Admiral here. How does the Admiral gain Connor's trust? : by saying that he stays in the middle of the desert in a rotting jet all year so why would he be selling kids and choosing who gets unwound and what parts of them he'd get
  6. What, according to the Admiral, is it that Connor is becoming famous for in the Graveyard?p212: first for the things he repairs and secondly for the fighting
  7. What happens to the Goldens?p217 : they suffocated after being sealed in a shipping crate
  8. How does Roland begin to assert his power in the Graveyard? (you'll need to look throughout the section) : he spreads rumours about the admiral
  9. P222-226 give us an insight into how the Unwinding Bill was passed into law. Summarise what happened, then explain whether or not you think it is plausible.: there was a big war with one side killing abortion doctors and the other side getting pregnant only to donate their fetal tissue
  10. The Admiral was there when the Bill of Life was signed - do you think this detracts from the believability of the commonplace nature of Unwinding? In your opinion, do you think the book should have a few more generations between those who signed the Bill, and the present state in the novel? : yeah i think it would help the book to have a more clear disconnect between the bill of life passing and what we are shown because with how short of a time it's been it makes it seem like people were waiting for it to be passed for a long time
  11. What job does Lev volunteer to do? P236 :" working on a pipeline in Alaska
  12. Which part of Harlan Dunfree does Emby have? P240 : his right lung
  13. Chapter 39 is from Roland's point of view. Why do you think Shusterman changes the narrative here? What do we learn in this short chapter? : that Roland has been sabotaging the graveyard to make the Admiral seem like he wants people to be in bad conditions
  14. By the end of this section, things at the Graveyard have deteriorated, with the unwinds turning on the Admiral, and tearing the place apart. Which character is beaten to death on p250? : Cleaver
  15. What does the Admiral refuse on p255? What is the doctor's reaction to this? : a heart transplant to save his life from a heart attack
  16. Why does Roland have the Juvey-Cops called? P259 Why doesn't his plan happen? P260-1 : because they had files for all three of them and the police knew about the graveyard for over a year so they wouldn't do anything unless the Admiral died

maths stuff

What were the main mathematical concepts or ideas that you learned or that we discussed in class?: radius diameter circles in general time speed

Describe a mistake or misconception that you or a classmate had in class. What did you learn from this mistake or misconception?: we made a mistake of failing to communicate so we were all on different levels of understanding so when one of us answered some of us didn't get it and so we need to work on communication
in health we are doing well being particularly taha Wairua this is all about beliefs and what you think so basically what you believe in and your senses of right wrong and all that jazz

From the values you chose, write about the three that are most important to you
Why is this value important to you
Recall a moment in your life were you really “lived” these values
If this value is not being respected by others, how might you feel or react
Commitment:
Commitment is a key value for me as I will rarely give up even in grim situations and if someone needs my help even if i’m busy if i’m close to them is will try my best to help
Commitment is important to me as it makes up who i am when it comes to interaction as when i get asked for help i’ll spend my time doing it if i find it will help immensely
Earlier this year a friend got told to help their cousin with some work and they asked me to help as they didn’t fully understand it and i spent my breaks and a bit of time at home to do it for them
I’d probably feel betrayed because of the fact that it is one of my defining characteristics and i show it a lot of the time and so i would probably feel betrayed
Friendship:
Friendship is important to me as I believe that the more friends you have and the closer you are to them the more likely you are to get their help when you need it so when you treat friends well they’ll treat you well
Friendship is important to me as i rely on others to help me with certain things like how you rely on a chef to cook their best when you go to a restaurant, as when they don’t do their best it can sometimes hurt you
Earlier this year a friend got told to help their cousin with some work and they asked me to help as they didn’t fully understand it and i spent my breaks and a bit of time at home to do it for them
Again i would feel betrayed because then my “friends” are just using me to get their work done and just have me around so they don’t have to do work or not as much work
openness:
Openness is important to me as I feel that unless it’s super personal it should be open to discussion I feel that no matter what you should be able to speak your mind and have options open to you
Openness is important to me as i believe that it’s incredibly harmful to keep things bottled up inside and when you can fully express yourself it feels great as you don’t have to worry about keeping secrets
When i was in fiji at our school we were extremely sexist (cause we didn’t know about sexism or racism or really any of that jazz) we really only went with the other gender when we got put into a group with them… until i realized that i’d probably get married to a girl (we also didn’t know all that much about sexuality) and so i started hanging out with girls and eventually stopped hanging out with the guys cause i prefered the girls and also they were nice to me basically straight of the bat
I’d feel upset and sad because since i really think that openness should be an option for everyone and not to be used for getting people to do things for you

part four destinations

1. this section opens with Lev in a pawnbroker's. What does this tell you about how his character is changing?: it shows that he's gotten over his whole high and mighty sch-tic and now will do whatever he needs to do to help Cy-Fi and himself get to Joplin

2. while being transported to possible safety, some of the kids on the run wonder, "would it be better to die or be unwound?", if given the choice what would you choose and why?: unwound because 1. then i can help people 2. my parents signed the order for a reason so that means that i was probably deserving and 3. then i can rest easy knowing that there's no emotional hardship

3. another question the kids in the book discuss is "if every part of you is alive but inside someone else, are you alive or dead?" they also wonder  if consciousness can exist even if it's spread out, and if the soul stays intact, what do you think?: i think that you are dead and that the soul if it exists disappears as you need to be whole and alive for there to be a soul it's like in Thomas Hobbes' Theseus paradox where if you take something apart completely but rebuild it later but while your taking the thing apart you replace the removed parts which is the original thing?, i believe that it can only be the thing if it's all of the original parts put together

4. this section of the novel sees Lev and Cy-Fi finally make it to Joplin, as they get closer, Cy-Fi's behaviour becomes increasingly erratic. what are some of the things he does, or things he likes that are not his own behaviours or memories?: he remembers tasting pumpkin ice cream which Cy-Fi hates,he remembers where he buried pets and some stolen items

5. what was Cy-Ty hiding in his backyard?: things that he had stolen when he was still two people like necklaces rings and pins

6. this section ends with Cy-Ty reaching his destination, what do you think of his parents' behaviour? and what does Lev's support show you about his character?: i think his parents response was completely justified and Lev's support shows that he cares enough about Cy-Ty enough to not only see his journey through but to help him and his parents connect again

Part three Transit

1. in the course of the book, Connor and Risa get separated from Lev, who travels for a time with another character, why do you think Shusterman  chose to split the narrative into two distinct threads, what do you think this achieves and how does this affect the evolution of the characters?:
i think he split it so we can get a better sense of the world and some of the things that people can do and other things that build the world up, i think that it achieves at making the world seem more alive and full and it helps Levs character evolve from the boy who was a tithe into the strong person who can fend for himself as well as giving Connor and Risa some breathing room so they can calm down and interact with new characters.

2. on p125 and p129 the novel touches on same sex relationships, has the attitude towards same sex relationships changed for the better or worse in this futuristic society, and explain your answer:
i think it's changed for the worse as now it's illegal for same sex couples to marry and they have names like yin families for couples that we usually call "gay" which used to mean happy and it's presumed that what we now call "lesbian" couples are called yang families once they get married due to the yin yang dynamic but it is never stated in the book

3. p130 begins our journey into understanding a little more about Cy-Fi. through his character, what do you learn about the effects of unwinding on both the donor and receiver?: it shows that doctors don;t give entire parts of the brain but instead a bunch of smaller parts from a multitude of people to avoid parts of the person who was unwound leeching into the brain of the receiver as with Cy-Fi the person who he got the right temporal lobe of a person who had the urge to grab shiny things like bracelets necklaces etc Cy-Fi got those urges sometimes along with feeling and sometimes images

4. what is the real reason Cy-Fi needs to get to Joplin Mo?: it's due to the person who he got the right temporal lobe from having guilt about something he id and it happened in Joplin Mo

5. what is the significance of Connor holding in his anger around Roland pg 149?: it shows that he's managed to keep his cool around someone who is trying to gain power over the people

6. Connor's anger and lack of impulse is often a problem for him, until he learns to control and channel his emotions. do you ever feel like your impulses are stronger than your will?: yes i do
what strategies do you use to control your feeling and do they work?:  I usually just take some time to breathe where there is little sound to just relax

paragraph

Child slavery is still a large thing today with millions of children in slavery some even having their whole family in slavery it’s considered illegal in multiple countries but the police aren’t doing anything to enforce the law, meaning that most people will get away with it.

In pakistan there are so many children making bricks, carpets etc and there is nothing the police can do about it due to the numbers and most aren’t against child labour cause it could mean that there are less juvenile delinquents on the streets and less people they need to arrest and take custody of

There are so many people in slavery and some that managed to escape like Iqbal who escaped from his masters twice before freeing the people he was working with and allowing them to be freed from slavery

So in short child slavery is still big in the world today and most countries it’s taking place in are doing nothing about it because the police are biased or just want child labour to be a thing

map
this is a map showing the top ten worst countries of child slavery, we did this map because we are learning about child slavery/labour

this ignores their human rights by blocking access to education and also it can be hazardous for their mental/physical health

part two storked

1. Risa overhears two nurses debating law and human nature which argument is stronger?: nurse young's argument which is you cannot change human nature without first changing the law
why do you think that is?: cause if we change the law the nature of people will change with it
write a paragraph explaining our thoughts on law and human nature:
i think that to change human nature you must change the law as when we change the law the nature of human survival makes us change to embrace the law as we don't want to get in trouble with the law and example is that if we make unwinding a thing children will act more cautiously until they turn 18 where they are no longer able to be unwound and that is why i believe that to change human nature you must first change the law

2. this section opens up with a mother abandoning her newborn infant on the doorstep of a house in a good neighbourhood as she leaves she thinks " How wonderful it is that she can get another chance." How wonderful it is that she can dismiss her responsibilities so easily?"
i think it isn't good for mothers to be able to dismiss the responsibility of having a child by storking it because she could always set it up for adoption or send it to a state home

3. in your opinion by allowing new mothers to give up their responsibilities so easily does it take away from the value of a child?: yes i think it does as if mothers can get rid of the children that means that they don't have to worry as much about having to care for children so they won't have as much precaution or fear of their child's well-being

4. what is the role of a mother? Do you think that the title of mother should be earned or is the natural right of a woman who has given birth?
natural right of a woman who has given birth

5. what skills or attributes do Connor and Risa have that work well together?: they can both change on the fly to make everything work with their situation

6. Connor and Lev have very different experiences with storking how has this helped shape each of their attitudes toward the society they live in?: it shapes how they feel about storking and how they feel about the laws towards it where Connor hates it but Lev likes it

7. Connor is concerned that the baby wont be loved and will ultimately die so he takes it what does this show about him as a person?: it shows that he cares for people and that he has instant survival instincts for human survival

8. what makes Lev realise he doesn't want to be unwound?: i think it was that pastor Dan was speaking difficultly

9. each of the other characters on the run have a tragic backstory. why were Hayden Mai and Roland  set to be unwound which is the most tragic and explain why?: i think Hayden's the most tragic because they could just agree on who has custody of him on certain days but they had him unwound

10. what tattoo does Roland have?: a tiger shark

harriet tubman

in class we've been learning about both Harriet Tubman and writing paragraphs using the SEEL structure so this is my paragraph about Harriet Tubman and her role in the underground railroad

Harriet Tubman was an american abolitionist who saved hundreds of people from slavery after she herself escaped from slavery herself.

Harriet Tubman was herself a slave as she was born into slavery and she escaped from her owners who mistreated her, having her care for her family's hut and infants that were born when she was still young.

Harriet Tubman was forced to care for her family the hut they lived in and multiple times had to care for infants while she was too young to work for her owners.

Harriet Tubman was a symbol of freedom and she still is as her achievements are legendary for her time as back then the people with the least power were the colours and women.

Harriet Tubman

in this topic i found making the slave trade triangle in google my maps interesting
I already knew about the slave trade triangle
I want to learn more about the other members of the underground railroad

Harriet Tubman was an important figure because it shows that even slaves can escape and help other slaves get to freedom
